Right-hander Jhoan Duran has been added back to the Twins’ active roster. The right-hander Matt Bowman has been assigned to a corresponding trade.
Bowman, 33, agreed to a minor league contract with the Twins over the offseason on May 31. After pitching six scoreless innings in Triple-A, he was added to the 40-man roster a little more than two weeks ago. Since then, he has made five appearances in the major leagues and tossed 7 2/3 innings.
His earned run average is currently 2.35, which is nice because he only gave up two earned runs throughout that period. The underlying statistics, though, have not been as noteworthy. So far, he’s walked four times and struck out six times, for respective percentages of 19.4% and 12.9%. Although his ground ball rate of 57.9% is impressive, he was never going to sustain a 90.9% strand rate or a.056 batting average on balls in play. His 5.64 FIP and 4.38 SIERA are significantly higher than his ERA in this limited sample because of this.
The Twins had to take Bowman off the 40-man roster completely since he is out of options in order to make room for Duran. They will now have a week to either pass Bowman through waivers or trade him. In the event that the latter came to pass, he would have served for more than three years, which would grant him the option to choose free agency over an assignment that he could not accept. But because he doesn’t have five years of service, he would have to sacrifice the remaining $925,000 in order to reenter the labor market.
Between 2020 and 2022, Bowman’s elbow injuries—which included Tommy John surgery—prevented him from throwing in official games. Last season, he was able to get back on the mound and threw 58 2/3 innings for the Yankees Triple-A team, recording a 3.99 ERA. In that time, he gave up walks at an 11.7% clip and received grounders at a 51.9% clip, striking out 22.6% of hitters faced. In the majors, he also pitched four innings for the Yanks but was outrighted at the end of the season, which made it possible for him to sign with the Twins.
