Superstar running back Barry Sanders was probably the best player at his position during his NFL playing career with the Detroit Lions. In fact, he was probably in the race to be the best player in the league.
Even though Sanders was without a doubt the best of the best at the running back position in the NFL, he made the early decision to leave the game, even though he wasn’t experiencing any injury problems like Calvin Johnson Jr. did in Detroit several years later.
Despite being named to the Pro Bowl in every season he played and being named an All-Pro in six of those seasons, Sanders only played in ten seasons with the Lions before deciding to end his career. He never truly disclosed the reasons for his decision.
Nevertheless, Sanders doesn’t mind not explaining his actions, and he’s demonstrated this once more by severing ties with EA Sports and the Madden series, according to a statement he posted on Twitter through Front Office Sports.
For Lions fans who like assuming the role of the venerable running back in the yearly Madden video game, this is a devastating blow, particularly considering that Detroit is currently among the greatest teams in the league, led by Jared Goff under quarterback and Dan Campbell calling the plays from the sidelines.
It’s likely that Sanders made this decision because he didn’t receive enough money or because he didn’t like the terms of the deal. It will be interesting to watch if any other NFL superstars decide to follow in his footsteps.
