After talking about her recent retirement from tennis, former world No. 1 and two-time major winner Garbine Muguruza said she “felt the need to move on in life.”
The 30-year-old Muguruza announced her retirement from competitive tennis last month. She hasn’t competed since the Lyon Open in January 2023.
In addition to winning ten career championships, Muguruza, the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon winner, has peaked at number one in the WTA Rankings and advanced to two more Slam finals.
Muguruza looked back with nostalgia on her best moments in the game, especially her victory over Anett Kontaveit in the 2021 WTA Finals, which turned out to be her last championship.
She did not miss a significant portion of her life as a tennis player, though, and she was prepared to move on, according to her comments to Tennis Channel.
“Well, it was pretty easy for me,” she remarked. It took me a while to make up my mind, but I know that some sportsmen take a while.
“I guess it was the lack of excitement and the need to move on in life.” I want to search for new chapters in my life as the years go by.
“Grand Slams and trophy victories are the most incredible things ever.” Furthermore, the Masters [WTA Finals] in Mexico were incredible; it was quite difficult for me to perform in front of the Latin audience; the entire stadium went bonkers. Poor [Anett] Kontaveit. Yes, those three are the greatest.
“I have to admit that I miss my team, my group, my sense of security, and traveling with them the most. that I long for most. I’m not missing that because it’s a hard sport that requires a lot of isolation and weekly travel.
“I’m attempting to solve it. I want to play tennis and work in the media, but I also want to try new things. I’m open to new opportunities because I’ve been around tennis my entire life.
Muguruza announced her engagement to Arthur Borges last year, so while her post-tennis career intentions are uncertain, she still has her wedding to look forward to.
The Spanish woman made the remark that their romance was like a “Hollywood movie” after she famously met her husband in New York when he asked her for a selfie.
“We make jokes about it all the time; it’s a crazy story that looks like a Hollywood film,” she continued.
“It was love at first sight when we first met on the street in New York.
It was one of those dull days when I had no idea what to do. I decided to take a walk in Central Park and happened to run into him. “Wait a minute, you’re very handsome. Who are you?” was all I could think.
“Hey, good luck,” he responded, recognizing me as a tennis enthusiast. And that’s it; it was sufficient.
