Regarding former teammate DeVonta Smith’s remarkable off-season physical growth, Jason Kelce has spoken out.
Former NFL champion Chad Ochocinco disclosed that Smith, who has a small build, had put on weight, weighing 190 pounds after exercising this offseason. Smith is a player with Kelce’s previous team, the Philadelphia Eagles.
On X, Kelce joked, pointing out that Smith’s gain in mass coincided with his arrival as a father: “That dad strength is starting to kick in.” Even on his days off, Smith was able to work thanks to his daughter, Kyse! Defenses are going to have issues.”
The two developed a close bond while playing together from 2021 until Kelce, then 36, announced his retirement this past season. During this time, Kelce produced three of his six All-Pro seasons, and Smith gained over 1,000 yards in both 2022 and 2023, helping the Eagles win their fourth Super Bowl ever in 2022.
Despite his small stature, Smith—the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy in 2020—has made an incredible transition to the NFL. When he entered the league, the former Alabama star weighed just 170 pounds, which earned him the nickname “Slim Reaper” from his Tuscaloosa college days.
But Smith seems to be back to his stronger self for the 2024 season now that he is a father. Ochocinco revealed that since making his debut, the Eagles’ fourth-year phenom has gained an additional 20 pounds.
You’re going to be like, ‘Goddamn boy, you’ve been working,’ when you see him this year. stated Ochocinco. He weighs roughly 190 pounds. I’m not kidding.
Last season, Smith’s partner gave birth the day before his team’s opening game against the New England Patriots. The athlete celebrated the occasion with a score and a “Rock the Baby” gesture as his team won 25–20.
Kelce has praised becoming a father a lot. During his retirement statement last month, Kelce stated, “I think being a father is one of the best things a person can be in this world.” “A father who is present, loving, and devoted just might be the greatest gift a child could ask for in our society, and I am a damn good one.”
The six-foot-tall Smith’s excellent college performance gave the Eagles unwavering confidence despite his initially slender frame and speed score at the NFL Combine, which put him in the lower 11th percentile. After selecting Smith with the tenth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, they immediately started him in the starting lineup.
