Jerry Jones’ Costly Gamble: Ezekiel Elliott’s Contract Extension Leads to Cowboys’ Offseason Woes

Under Jerry Jones’ direction, Cowboys fans are once again dealing with a miserable offseason.

Even though it is upsetting, this is not the first time we have witnessed the Dallas Cowboys let talented

Players leave without having suitable successors in place. In Jones’ 35 years as this team’s leader, there have been many puzzling decisions made.

We will simply concentrate on the past ten years because it would be an enormous task to focus on all of those.

Let’s examine the six most significant errors committed by Jones and the Cowboys front staff since 2014.

6. Extension of the Ezekiel Elliott Contract

Following three successful seasons in the Cowboys’ lineup, Dallas exercised Ezekiel Elliott’s contract

option for a fifth year. But during training camp, the former #4 overall pick refused to give up, which

sparked talks of a contract extension. This led to a hefty $90 million, with $50 million guaranteed.

six-year contract deal that was meant to keep Zeke under contract through the 2026 season.

When the NFL as a whole was zigging, this was Jerry Jones zagging. The Cowboys paid their running

backs the highest salary in the league and gave him the largest guaranteed income of any rusher ever, during a

period when every team was paying their running backs less.

Even with Elliott’s skill level, there are a lot of risks involved in offering any running back such a large, long-term

contract. And the Cowboys paid a price for those. Elliott’s muscular running style made it evidently tough for him

to maintain his output into his late 20s. Dallas cut him after he had the lowest yards per rush average (3.8) in the NFL in 2022.

Following his offseason signing with the Patriots, Elliott struggled even more, and he is currently

considering returning to Dallas in an attempt to restart his career.
