The field for the 106th PGA Championship at Valhalla next week was revealed on Tuesday, and names included Tiger Woods and the top 103 golfers in the world. The 15-time major winner Woods has found it difficult to walk four rounds in competitions since sustaining serious leg injuries in an automobile accident in 2021, but he placed 60th at the Masters last month and stated he intends to play once a month through the US and British Opens. After missing last year’s PGA Championship due to ankle surgery, he withdrew after three rounds in 2022. Both Woods and Northern Ireland’s four-time major champion Rory McIlroy have won PGA Championship championships at Valhalla; McIlroy’s most recent major victory came in 2014. Thirteen of the thirty-three major winners in the PGA field are past PGA Championship winners. In the 156-player field, two spots are still available for the winners of this week’s PGA Tour events, provided they haven’t already earned a spot through qualifying for the match in Louisville, Kentucky. The top 103 players in the official global golf rankings, including top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, who won his second Masters championship last month, are in the field. In order to be with his wife, Meredith, as she gets ready to give birth, Scheffler is missing this week’s PGA Tour event. 16 players in the LIV Golf League The second major tournament of the year will include 16 players from the LIV Golf League, including the reigning champion Brooks Koepka of the United States. Other LIV players from the top 100 in the world include Poland’s Adrian Meronk, England’s Joaquin Niemann, Australia’s Cameron Smith and Lucas Herbert, England’s 17th-ranked Tyrrell Hatton, and the United States’ Patrick Reed. Martin Kaymer, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Phil Mickelson are among the other notable LIV winners. The winner of the LIV season the previous year, American Talor Gooch, received an invitation to his fifth straight PGA Championship. Although he missed the cut last year, his best finish came in 2022 with a share of 20th place. Twenty qualifiers, twenty club pros, and Michael Block—who placed 15th at Oak Hill last year—are among the field.
