Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at William & Mary and UNCW had their seasons ended on Friday due to losses in the NCAA Tennis Championship first round.
The Seahawks’ 12-game winning streak came to an end when they were defeated 4-0 by No. 14 NC State, while the Tribe’s 14-match winning run was ended by a 4-0 loss to No. 29 Wisconsin.
The Badgers’ 40th-ranked team, Maria Sholokhova and Alina Mukhortova, defeated the Tribe’s top pair, Emma Fernald and Yu Chen, 6-4. This resulted in the match being abandoned. In doubles, W&M’s No. 3 pair, Francesca Davis and Mila Mejic, led 6-5.
In the singles division, victories at three of the top four spots by Sholokhova (No. 1), who is ranked No. 82 nationally, Mukhortova (No. 3), and Xinyu Cai (No. 4) guaranteed Wisconsin’s advancement to the next round.
In doubles, the Seahawks gave NC State everything it could handle. UNCW’s No. 3 team, consisting of Gabe Hurtado and Trey Mallory, overcame Braden Shick and Fons Van Sambeek, 7-5, after losing at No. 1. The match ended in a tiebreaker at No. 2, with Drew Broadstreet and Bek Rasamatov of UNCW losing 7-6 (5).
In the opening set of the singles match, Gabe Hurtado defeated 72nd-ranked Van Sambeek at No. 4, while Harold Huens of UNCW was leading 54th-ranked Robin Catry, 6-4, 4-3, at No. 1. However, NCSU won at Nos. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 to wrap up the match.
