After missing the Italian Open for three years running, Matteo Berrettini will make his comeback this year, and he is ecstatic.
The Italian appears to be returning to full health and competitive action after a protracted battle with injuries. A few weeks ago, he emerged victorious from the Marrakech Open, his first title since his injury.
Although he hasn’t played much since then, he will play in the Italian Open this year. Since he is from Rome, his family and friends will be attending the ATP 1000 event, which holds great significance for him.
Since it’s one of the few tournaments staged in Italy, Italian players instinctively anticipate it. Plus, it’s among the world’s most gorgeous tennis venues, which only enhances the experience.
Prior to the event, Berrettini spoke with the media and stated his excitement about returning to the event. He hasn’t competed in the Italian capital since 2021, when he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round.
“I would have preferred to show up in better [physical] shape. I’m exerting every effort to prepare for my upcoming match. Rome is the reason I’m here. It had been three years since I had visited, and I really missed it.”
Berrettini is about to perform in Rome
In 2020, Berrettini achieved his greatest run in Rome as he advanced to the quarterfinals. He’s obviously capable of more, as seen by his recent strong clay performances.
His opponent in the first round, Stefano Napolitano, a compatriot who has been playing quite well lately, wasn’t the simplest draw for him. The match might be intriguing, but if Berrettini is at full strength and performs to his best ability, he should have no issues with his countryman.
