Record-breaking Debut: Jessie Secor Shatters Freshman Mile Record at App State Open

BOONE, North Carolina At the App State Open on Friday night, Lady Vol track and field rookie Jessie Secor broke the 47-year-old freshman record in the outdoor mile, clocking in a winning time of 4:49.52 for her first ever mile as a varsity athlete.
The native of Louisville, Kentucky, beat Brenda Webb’s 1977 record of 4:55.1, which stood as the previous UT rookie best. Secor’s score was the second freshman record achieved by UT in a short period of time. At the Penn Relays on Thursday, Caroline Lyerly set a new rookie record in the women’s 10,000-meter event with a time of 33:19.80.
With Christopher Cherry (4:02.26) and Canaan Anderson (4:03.16) securing the top two spots in the mile, Tennessee’s men’s team delivered a powerful 1-2 punch. Freshman Brady Chapman won his second race of the season in the men’s invitational 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing first overall with a lifetime-best time of 9:05.71.
UP NEXT: Three meets are scheduled for Saturday, the last weekend of the outdoor regular season for Tennessee track & field. The women’s 5k and men’s 800-meter distance crew events will conclude the App State Open, and four pole vaulters and one horizontal jumper will compete in Louisville’s Clark Wood Invitational. At the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona, UT’s sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers will wrap up their weekend. The men’s 4×400-meter relay will take place at around one in the morning on Sunday.
