Good News: Former Minnesota Signs NFL Deal with Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Zack Annexstad, a walk-on freshman from IMG Academy (FL), was selected as the starting quarterback in PJ Fleck’s second season as head coach of the Minnesota Gophers. He defeated redshirt freshman Tanner Morgan in the process.

After going 3-0 to open the 2018 campaign, Annexstad had an injury that prevented him from fully challenging Morgan for the starting position. Morgan went on to have one of the most successful passing seasons in Gopher football history in 2019.

Zack, though, stayed as long as he could. He spent four years in Dinkytown until announcing his intention to leave following the 2021 campaign. He attended Illinois State for two years, during which time he threw for 3,547 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

Zack Annexstad, a former QB for the Minnesota Gophers, gets his NFL debut.

Despite his lackluster performance, the 6’3′′, 220 lb. quarterback still managed to receive a chance to play in the NFL. Annexstad signed an undrafted rookie free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday. As everyone knows, the Bucs are huge Minnesota Gophers fans.

This revelation might surprise a lot of Gopher fans. However, in reality, these undrafted rookie free agency contracts frequently boil down to measurables and raw skill sets. And Zack has always found those things to be particularly noteworthy. He’s tall and broad, and he had a powerful arm going into college that has just gotten stronger.

Zack Annexstad passed for 1,277 yards, nine touchdowns, and seven interceptions while a gopher. We’ll now watch how far he can take his NFL dream. Being a wonderful young man always helps when you’re a young QB3 or QB4 trying to find employment. He still has a pretty steep hill to climb, though.
