Baker Mayfield was only given the chance to start by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season, and it appears that the former first overall pick may end up being more than just a stand-in.
Since taking over as Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback this season, Mayfield has excelled. The Buccaneers are definitely in the running for the playoffs going into Week 16 primarily because of his better-than-expected performance. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Mayfield and the Bucs intend to continue their collaboration in 2024.
Mayfield and the Bucs share a desire for the quarterback to return in 2024 and possibly beyond, according to a Sunday Rapoport report. But given his play this season, Mayfield is set to become a free agent, so other teams might be interested. Mayfield can also be used with the franchise tag by the Buccaneers.
Throughout the season, Mayfield has thrown for 3,315 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just 8 interceptions. He set a record at Lambeau Field last week in the victory over the Green Bay Packers because of his outstanding play.
The Buccaneers are now 7-7 and in first place in the NFC South after winning their last three games.
After Tom Brady retired, many predicted Tampa Bay would be lucky to win a few games, if they were lucky enough to make it to the playoffs. From this point on, Mayfield, 28, can only raise his profile even more.
In Sunday’s victory over the Green Bay Packers, Baker Mayfield of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was outstanding. It is even possible to argue that he was the best visiting quarterback in Lambeau Field history.
In Tampa Bay’s 34-20 victory over the Packers, Mayfield completed 22 of 28 passes for 381 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions.
