In his first two NFL seasons, Brock Purdy went from being Mr. Insignificant to a standout quarterback for the 49ers. He is now guiding San Francisco, the top-seeded team, into the playoffs.
Purdy, who was selected as the last choice in the seventh and final round of the 2022 NFL draft, emerged as one of the most proficient quarterbacks in the league during the 2023 season. With 4,280 yards and 31 throwing touchdowns, he led the league in QBR passer rating and placed himself in MVP consideration.
Even the finest, however, need a strong backup. There are two additional quarterbacks on San Francisco’s roster who may move into Kyle Shanahan’s scheme.
This is all the information you want on the 49ers’ quarterback depth chart for the 2024 NFL playoffs.
Who is the backup quarterback for the 49ers?
Purdy, 24, has established himself as San Francisco’s starting quarterback. But the Niners have a previous top-three selection as his backup in case he isn’t available.
Purdy’s primary understudy is named Sam Darnold. In the last four seasons, the 26-year-old has played for the 49ers, Panthers, and Jets. He made only one start during his first year in San Francisco: the regular-season finale, a 21-20 defeat in which he completed 16 of 26 passes for 189 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions.
Darnold, the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of USC, started quarterback for the Jets for three seasons. He was moved to the Panthers in 2021, and he spent the next two seasons playing there.

As the third-string quarterback for the 49ers, Brandon Allen rounds out the group.
Former Arkansas standout Allen joined the Jaguars in 2016 as a backup quarterback. Prior to moving to San Francisco in 2023, he had played for the Bengals, Broncos, and Rams.
Most famously, in 2020, he replaced star Joe Burrow as the Bengals’ starting quarterback when Burrow tore his ACL. He completed 925 yards of passing with five touchdowns and four interceptions in five starts.
