New York Red Bulls and Vancouver Whitecaps Draw in Harrison with a reduction in both teams

In a 1-1 draw in Harrison, New Jersey, the New York Red Bulls and Vancouver Whitecaps were forced to play the final quarter of an hour and stoppage time with 10 men as Lewis Morgan’s goal in the 56th minute cancelled out the first goal by former Red Bulls striker Brian White.

This was the New York team’s third straight draw. For the first time since being moved to Vancouver in June 2021, White was playing against his former team. He gave the Whitecaps the lead in the 15th minute when he headed in a cross from Ryan Raposo and beat Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel for his team-high fifth goal of the year.

In addition, it was White’s 44th goal for Vancouver in all competitions, setting a club record for the team in the MLS era that dates back to 2011. The native of Flemington, New Jersey, who was accompanied by a large number of family members for his comeback to Red Bull Arena, had a chance to make it 2-0 in the thirty-first minute when he found himself one-on-one with Coronel, but his opportunity was lost. Eventually, though, Morgan tied the score in the 56th minute. Yohei Takaoka, the goalkeeper for the Whitecaps, managed to stop a corner kick from New York, but the ball ended up in the hands of the Scottish winger, who leveled the score with a diving header.

In the 74th minute, Noah Eile was given a red card for a handball that prevented a clear Vancouver scoring opportunity, bringing New York (4-1-5, 17 points) down to 10 players. However, despite coming into the game having won their first three away games of the season, the Whitecaps (5-5-2, 17 points) were unable to take advantage of the man advantage. They went close twice: once in stoppage time when an attempt by Ali Ahmed bounced off a New York defender inside the scoring area but missed the mark, and again in the 80th minute when Coronel stopped an effort from Ahmed.
