Sad news: The Detroit Lions of Matt Patricia’s era are almost completely gone…
Brad Holmes, the general manager of the Detroit Lions, attempted to appease the supporters by referring to his work as a “retooling” of the current roster when he took over in 2021. Even he acknowledges that it was a complete reconstruction four years later. Earlier this year, Holmes stated, “I remember I used the word’retool’ and I got killed because I probably should have used the word rebuild, but they were wondering how long the build is going to take.” As it happens, it took nearly three years. The Lions, who finished one half of a game short of the Super Bowl the previous year, will start OTAs with the fourth-best odds to win the title this time around. And there’s no denying that Holmes and Dan Campbell make up almost the whole of the remaining roster. Both came into the position with the very clear goal of assembling a group of players who were extremely driven and of high character. They would add skill after these workout warriors laid the groundwork, initially concentrating on the trenches. With the addition of important weapons to support them (Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Sam LaPorta), the offensive line emerged as the team’s core. Although the main purpose of the assets has been the draft, Holmes has periodically become a free agent. As we approach the fourth season, almost all of the players that Holmes received from previous general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia are no longer there. The 53-man roster from Detroit’s last 2020 game is shown below, with each player who is no longer with the team checked out: Among the sixty players on the roster, those five are still with the team: Frank Ragnow, Dan Skipper, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Jack Fox, and Taylor Decker. Just two are regular starters; the other (Reeves-Maybin) is a punter who left Detroit and returned later. In 2020, the roster of players still in Detroit would only include Tom Kennedy, even if you were to go through the team’s practice squad. In summary, this is just Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell’s roster, which is presumably why they rank among the NFL’s top teams.
