Safety Richie Grant’s role is probably not one of the first things that springs to mind when thinking back on the Atlanta Falcons’ 2023 season, at least not in a good way. Pro Football Focus (PFF) ranked Grant as the 89th safeties out of 95 qualified players. Alternatively, one might think about the quarterback carousel, Arthur Smith’s dismissal as head coach, or the poor 7-10 season that was spoiled by four defeats in the last five games. However, Grant’s abrupt transition from a reliable starter to an infrequently used rotational player and member of the special teams is perhaps related to Atlanta’s narrative from the previous season. Ultimately, seventh-round rookie DeMarcco Hellams replaced Grant, a 2021 second-round pick who started all nine games in 2022 and did not miss a defensive snap in the first nine games of 2023. After Atlanta’s Week 11 bye, the team started using more three-safety looks. Although Grant played at least 75% of the defensive snaps in the team’s first three games after that, his position started to shift. Grant only participated in 11%, 38%, and 42% of the Falcons’ defensive snaps in Weeks 14 through 16. Atlanta’s back-end operations were managed by Hellams and Jessie Bates III. Grant had been put on hold. However, Grant played every snap in Week 18 as Hellams was sidelined due to a concussion, recording 10 tackles, one sack, and one tackle for loss. By all accounts, Grant’s dismal and unpredictable season was similar to the Falcons’ entire experience; nonetheless, Raheem Morris, the new head coach, thinks Grant’s future holds more promise. Morris added, “I told Richie that I was wrong about him when I got here.” I had underestimated his skill as a player. Additionally, he plays incredibly well, performs effectively, and makes hard tackles. Obviously, I was in a different position when I assessed him. AN ADVERT “However, he’s shown me a tonne of excellent stuff on tape.” With 103 tackles, the 26-year-old Grant completed the previous season tied for fourth on the team in tackles; just four Falcons, including linebackers Nate Landman and Kaden Elliss, surpassed the 100-tackle threshold. The 6-0, 200-pound Grant also added an interception, three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and six passes defensed. According to Pro Football Reference, he failed in pass coverage, allowing 39 receptions for 543 yards and six touchdowns on just 57 targets. When throwing to Grant, opposing quarterbacks completed 68.4% of their passes. When evaluating Grant’s worth since moving to Flowery Branch three years ago, Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot cited Grant’s immediate influence on special teams. In 12 of the 16 games in which he made his debut as a rookie, Grant played at least 80% of the special teams snaps. […]

1. Carter Lorenzo Lorenzo Carter seems like a nice teammate and a reliable presence in the locker room, but he can’t consistently pressure quarterbacks in opposition. It may be said that a pass rusher needs to possess this ability. Although there are evident worries about Carter’s pass rush limitations, he is an excellent run defender with a strong motor. The defensive staff in Atlanta places a high emphasis on these, which may allow Carter to remain on the roster in the interim. Additionally, there’s a good likelihood that Carter will still be at the top of the depth chart on opening day, as Trice is the only edge rusher the Falcons added through the draft. Every club that has a pass rush that is even remotely competent would have to cut Carter according to his contract. Atlanta still has safety, corners, and receivers to upgrade in free agency. Carter’s removal might facilitate those changes, but it seems Atlanta is OK with their current depth chart. Terry Fontenot has demonstrated a commitment to some players who seemed like clear cuts. Another player who many would have thought would be an obvious cut coming into the season is Taylor Heinicke. 2. The Cousins of Kirk Let’s start by discussing the ludicrous trade rumours, which disregard the contract issue and all of Atlanta’s statements regarding the position. The second is stating the obvious—that Cousins and Atlanta are not in agreement and that the team is to blame for failing to inform their quarterback of this before selecting him with the eighth overall pick in the draft. The fact that Cousins received a four-year contract shortly after the team selected a quarterback is the reason he is included on this list. The front desk is informing you that they will not be keeping the agreement they made with you. Although there is a simple way out of the contract after year two, the team will still be slapped with a dead cap. There is now much greater pressure on Cousins to fully recover from his injury. If not, both the front office and the fans will start to wonder if keeping the youngster on the bench is a viable option. […]

Taking into account all of the different factors involved, the move is unusual. The choice was heavily criticised, and most analysts gave the Falcons the lowest selection marks since even astute NFL assessors could not find any sense in the strategy. I’m not here to support the move in and of itself, but rather to point out that it isn’t foolish or nonsensical. The team’s approach is highly realistic and consistent with previous decisions they have made. One complaint was that, although he was the fifth-best quarterback, Michael Penix Jr. was rated 31st on the consensus big board. He was chosen by Atlanta 23 spots ahead of his big board rank as the fourth quarterback off the board. In general, teams that deviate from the consensus board have a poor track record, and players who are designated “reaches” usually perform worse than those whose ranks on the consensus board align with them. But this was no ordinary draft, with Penix obviously rated higher by the Falcons than the majority of other players. The fact that they don’t seem to have been alone in that regard is crucial, though. It appears that at least some NFL evaluators think Penix is a better prospect than the consensus board because several other teams have reportedly placed Penix at the top of their prospect rankings. The Falcons weren’t acting alone in this situation. Before the national championship game, he was even listed in that vicinity, according to the draft narrative about his stock. Following Penix’s College Football Playoff victory over Texas, there was buzz that he was suddenly a mid-first-round prospect who might break into the top 10 by April. Everyone, without a doubt, believed that the Atlanta Falcons would select a cornerback later in the draft. At one point, the team told us straight out that they were planning to bring in a young cornerback. But eight selections passed with not a single defensive back. They selected four front-seven players: a running back, a wide receiver, and a quarterback, but there were no DBs selected. Following the draft, Terry Fontenot made some sardonic remarks about why the Falcons hadn’t selected a cornerback. All of this indicates their confidence in All-Pro cornerback A.J. Terrell, who is expected to receive a significant extension in the near future. A.J. Terrell, a former first-round selection, has established himself as the Atlanta Falcons’ lockdown corner after a difficult beginning to his NFL career. He had an incredible season in 2021, and he had strong seasons in 2022 and 2023. Terrell is also entering the fifth year of his rookie deal; the Falcons run the possibility of losing him in March if they don’t sign him to an extension now. Having a corner like Terrell is essential, given the way the NFL is constructed these days. The Falcons’ confidence in their ability to close a deal is evident in their decision to pass on selecting a cornerback in the draft this year. On day one or two, they would have drafted a corner to create a safety net if they had any misgivings. Since Raheem Morris has always been A.J.’s biggest fan, Terry Fontenot has already expressed his wish to sign him to a long-term contract. It would be a mistake for the Falcons to let Terrell go. Four years ago, they selected him with their first-round pick, and as a lockdown corner, he has validated their decision. He has demonstrated that he is capable of doing anything you ask of him, not only catching the ball. He can tackle, get physical, and even lay the boom on unwary ball carriers. He has experience as a lockdown zone and man corner.
