The Cowboys find themselves in a similar predicament for the upcoming offseason after failing to reach a long-term deal despite applying the franchise tag to running back Tony Pollard last offseason. Rico Dowdle is also scheduled to become a free agent, which could create a big hole in their depth chart for running backs.
The loss of both players might require the team to add more players to the roster. The Cowboys are anticipated to be involved in the running back market, though it is still unclear which tier they will play in.
The Cowboys Might Try To Make A Huge Running Back Trade
Joe Tansey of Bleacher Report has suggested the Cowboys take a risk by investigating a blockbuster trade, aiming for the top of the market. Tansey stated that the Cowboys will be pursuing Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints in the upcoming offseason.
“The Dallas offence could improve from the high level it is currently playing at this season with the possible acquisition of Alvin Kamara, but this is more of a swing-for-the-fences kind of idea. Under his current contract, the 28-year-old would come with a high price tag, but the Cowboys may be willing to take that chance in order to have an offence that can compete with any team in the league. It may be more of a fantasy than a reality because Dallas would have to return a few draft picks to New Orleans, but it is still worth a try, particularly if Pollard signs a free agent deal
Despite his remarkable abilities, 28-year-old Kamara’s current contract has a high price tag. While acknowledging the possible risk, Tansey speculates that the Cowboys might be open to taking this kind of action in order to advance their offence to a championship level. The Cowboys would have to send multiple draft picks to New Orleans in order to acquire Kamara, which makes the deal an interesting but difficult one.
Kamara is an expensive acquisition because he is currently bound by a five-year, $75 million contract. But with Ezekiel Elliott now gone from the Cowboys and a $90 million contract, Kamara’s price tag might be considered too high for the team.
In terms of money, Kamara is projected to make $10.2 million in 2024 with a $18.8 million cap hit. That casts doubt on the Cowboys’ ability to pursue Kamara, particularly in light of the more affordable option of a $12 million franchise tag for Pollard for a second consecutive season.
A marquee running back might be intriguing, but the Cowboys also have other players whose contracts are about to expire, like Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb, and Tyler Biadasz.
Even though it might not be the main priority, Pollard’s departure may compel the Cowboys to consider running back as an essential component of their offensive plan. Jerry Jones and company would have a difficult time finding a more intriguing target than Alvin Kamara.
