The Minnesota Twins’ current 12-game winning streak came to an end, but the organization still has the original summer sausage, which players have been humorously credited with inspiring the run.
Dan Hayes of The Athletic verified on Tuesday that the squad still had the original sausage, despite manager Rocco Baldelli’s statement that it would be thrown out after the winning streak ended. Its magic is still there, in fact.
Says Adidas: “You’re Got This.”
The original sausage was brought back into the dugout on Monday night when the Twins offense was having trouble in the early innings of their series opener against the Seattle Mariners. At Target Field, the Twins went on to win 3-1 after scoring one run in the fifth and two more in the eighth.
Despite going into the season as strong favorites to win the AL Central, the Twins had a difficult start to the season, winning only seven of their first 20 games. These difficulties continued until Minnesota infielder Kyle Farmer introduced the rally sausage into the fold.
Farmer discovered a Cloverdale summer sausage in his locker during an April series against the Chicago White Sox. He placed the sausage on a table in the clubhouse for his teammates to eat because he didn’t want it.
David Popkins, the hitting coach for the Twins, brought the sausage to the dugout after grabbing it off the table for an unknown reason. That day the Twins prevailed, therefore the sausage was saved. After a huge hit or a home run, it became the focal point of festivities, with Minnesota catcher Ryan Jeffers tossing the sausage to a teammate as he walked back into the dugout.
The Twins continued their winning streak at 12 games without a loss, which is tied for the second-longest in team history.
Target Field will host the second leg of Minnesota vs. Seattle on Tuesday. Presumably, the original rally sausage will also be present—just keep it a secret from the FDA.
