Son of former Packers receiver Walter Stanley, Dimitri Stanley was signed by the Green Bay Packers. This is how the news reached his father. GREEN BAY, Wisconsin: While attending the Denver Nuggets NBA playoff game on Saturday night, former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Walter Stanley received a text message from his son Dimitri. Walter Stanley remarked to Packer Central on Sunday, “In that text, he has a picture of him signing with the Packers and said, ‘Dad, I’ve just landed.'” “As I sat here in my suite recliner, watching the game, I pulled this up. I turned to face my wife, who was seated across from me, and she read the caption after I showed her the photo. Of course, she began sobbing right away.“Everyone in the suite is observing her and asking themselves, ‘What’s going on?'” What’s happening? Thus, it was quite sentimental. Given how hard he has worked, it was really emotional for both of us. We are also aware of his excellence. Three players, including Dimitri Stanley, signed contracts with the Packers after trying out for the team during its rookie minicamp. It was the pinnacle of a promising, high-stakes, and disappointing college career. Stanley transferred to Iowa State in 2022 from Colorado, where his father began his collegiate career, after four seasons and the impending appointment of a fourth head coach. In his rookie season, he caught 33 receptions for 420 yards in the air. However, he missed his shot to secure a spot in the NFL in 2023 as he only caught 15 catches for 139 yards. In six out of the twelve games, he wasn’t even targeted despite seeing a lot of playing time. He had to deal with not only not getting the ball but also being called upon to just go down and block and run decoy routes, clear-out routes, and knowing that the ball was always going to go to someone else, even if he was open. Walter said, “It was probably one of the worst experiences I’ve ever seen any kid that I’ve been around his final year of college.” That’s difficult for a sportsperson. That is really difficult. It has been incredible to watch him handle that, take it on the chin, overcome it, maintain his positive attitude towards his colleagues, and just keep working and pushing.” Naturally, his prospects of being selected in the NFL Draft were severely damaged by his lack of output. In 1985, the Packers selected Walter in the fourth round, but Dimitri was not selected and was not signed as a priority free agent. Selected as one of eighteen tryout players for the Packers rookie camp, his chance could have been the difference between making or breaking his career.Coach Matt LaFleur was impressed with a one-handed catch on Friday, and on Saturday, he signed. Walter stated, “I felt that he had earned this; he had worked extremely hard for it.” The fact that it was the Green Bay Packers was the cherry on top. Despite only catching 15 of 16 targeted receptions in 2023, he did not receive many opportunities at Iowa State before earning a spot on the Packers’ 90-man roster. He also had no effect as a punt returner. Walter Stanley’s calling card was the latter. He recorded an incredible 83-yard touchdown against Detroit on Thanksgiving in 1986, led the NFL with a 13.8-yard average with the Lions in 1989, and averaged 12.8 yards per return as a rookie with the Packers. In his final season at Colorado in 2021, Dimitri Stanley averaged 12.3 yards per punt return; however, in his two seasons at Iowa State, he had just two returns. Walter claimed that on one of them, he was only prevented from going farther by a shoestring tackle. Walter remarked, “The problem is, he’s probably as good as me, if not slightly better. “It was lights out every time he touched the ball. Almost every punt to the house was being taken by him. Simply put, he was unable to complete it. He’s got serious threat potential up there. I don’t say that only because my child is involved. He’ll tell you that I’ve always told it like it is, telling him what I see, what he excels in, and what he might not be as good at. I will say this: he is an extremely skilled punt returner. He would rank among the top punt returners in the game, as I understand it. He brings about events. Dimitri Stanley will have a good chance at joining the Packers’ deep, skilled, and youthful receiving group if he can perform well as a punt returner during training camp, the offseason, and the regular season. They didn’t choose a receiver and didn’t sign one after the draft because of how strong this bunch is. Stanley and another tryout player, Julian Hicks, are the only additions. However, he does have a chance. It will feel very much like home. For me, that is home,” Walter remarked. “I started playing football there, outside of high school. It feels a lot like home. Additionally, it feels like a dream come true. Dimitri Stanley would have seized any chance, no doubt. But the fact that the Packers are involved makes it even more delightful. He had to put up with the external pressures that come with being an NFL player’s son. the letdown of spending six years as a collegiate player for four losing teams. of never quite reaching his dream of becoming a star player. It is all irrelevant at this point. He merits a chance. “It will be exciting for him to have that opportunity,” Walter remarked. He adores the Green Bay Packers. Last night, my daughter pulled up a letter he had written in the fourth grade. He also declared in the fourth grade that he wanted to be like his father.Naturally, he responds, “I want to play for every team my dad played for.” Of course, he mentioned the Green Bay Packers as one of the clubs in that letter. He so began to manifest this idea that he would play for the Packers in the fourth grade. It’s truly an incredible tale that that should really have occurred and that it was his first professional opportunity. It’s incredible.
