A major starter from the 2023 season will have around a week to agree to a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys, or they can choose to walk to the Carolina Panthers. Since Jerry Jones declared that he would be “all-in” for the next season, the Cowboys have had a lackluster free agency class this offseason.
Since the league’s new year began in March, the Cowboys have added two outside free agents to their roster: running back Royce Freeman. Tyron Smith and Tony Pollard, two of the Cowboys’ key players, have left the team for other teams that offer a greater salary.
Veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore stated earlier in the offseason that rejoining the Cowboys was his “goal,” as was previously covered on GH. Other teams are showing interest in him, though, as the Cowboys have not yet offered him a new contract.
Because they are both from the Carolinas, Jadeveon Clowney has encouraged him to return home and join the Panthers. Although they haven’t done so yet, the Panthers wish to have an agreement with Gilmore.
General manager Dan Morgan stated they’re keeping the door open for Gilmore, according to Darin Gantt of the Panthers website. After the 2024 NFL Draft, the Panthers will “revisit” their negotiations with Gilmore.
If the Cowboys wish to re-sign Gilmore, they won’t have much time to spare. A team in need of cornerbacks will undoubtedly sign the 33-year-old two-time All-Pro before the next season begins.
With a 74.4 overall grade for his efforts in the previous season, Gilmore is ranked as the 35th-highest-graded cornerback for 2023 by Pro Football Focus.
He’s still got game. Is it going to be for Dallas? Or will they lose one more seasoned player?
