A second proposal is made by Southampton for Manuel Benson of Burnley.
With 11 goals and three assists in 33 second-tier matches, the 26-year-old was a vital member of the Clarets team that cruised to the championship victory the previous year.
Benson’s playing time has been limited thus far in 2023–24, though, as a result of the summertime additions of Wilson Odobert and Lucas Koleosho from Espanyol and Troyous, respectively.
This season, the former Belgian youth international has played in just 73 minutes of Premier League football. On August 27, he started his only game in the top division, a loss to Aston Villa.
As the January window nears its conclusion, Southampton is reportedly making more of an effort to sign Benson, according to Belgian writer Sacha Tavolieri.
According to the report, Russell Martin’s team has made a second offer for the attacker in an attempt to entice the Clarets to sign a contract this month.
It’s believed that Benson will spend the rest of the 2023–24 season on loan at St. Mary’s; the South Coast club has the option to make the deal permanent in the summer.
The winger, who is having difficulty finding playing time at Turf Moor under Vincent Kompany, is reportedly eager to join the promotion-chasing Saints in the upcoming weeks.
Southampton, who is presently enjoying a 19-game unbeaten streak in the second tier, is only three points behind Ipswich Town in the Championship standings.
But Benson isn’t just appealing to Martin’s team; Hull City, a competitor in the Championship, is also rumored to be interested in signing the Belgian.
Earlier in the month, it was claimed that Benson’s loan move from Burnley to the MKM Stadium had been verbally agreed to by the Tigers, but, since then, the transaction has not advanced.
Portuguese winger Fabio Carvalho was signed by Liam Rosenior’s team on loan from Liverpool in the meantime, but the Humberside club is not yet happy with its January acquisitions.
In terms of transfers, Hull is going all out to finish in the top six during the second half of the season, despite the fact that the Tigers have lost six of their past nine games in all competitions.
Benson was not used as a substitute in Burnley’s Friday draw with Luton Town, and it is unlikely that the winger will still be with the team when the Clarets play Manchester City on January 31.
