The most unexpected selection in the 2024 NFL Draft and in recent NFL Draft history was made by the Atlanta Falcons when they selected quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall choice in the April draft. The team signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year contract worth up to $180 million this off-season, as was announced just weeks later. Terry Fontenot, general manager, had a long-term strategy for the signing. Analysis surrounded Penix’s unexpected move with a litany of complaints. Former New York Giants executive and NFL Network analyst Marc Ross thinks it was worries about Cousins’ Achilles tendon. Ross had stated, Will Kirk Cousins be able to fully recover from that Achilles injury? I’m not sure. That seems a little off; there could be a setback. Michael Penix will therefore be making his debut during training camp and the preseason. He will start from the bottom of the dome on opening day. In addition to leading his team to a national title game appearance, Penix was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and the 2023 Maxwell Award. discussed what he brings to his new team at the next level during the pre-draft process at the Senior Bowl. “As a player, I excel at making every throw on the field. You know, I think I have a really special arm skill. The most important thing is that I believe I can accomplish anything. I am able to run. I feel like people don’t know because they don’t see me run very often. I can flee, and they will soon discover me here. Given that Cousins will turn 36 years old before the 2024 season begins and is recovering from a serious Achilles injury, the Falcons made an obvious decision in selecting Penix for long-term security.
