Following a week of deliberation about the Falcons’ 2024 NFL Draft class, opinions among Atlanta’s supporters are almost evenly divided regarding the team’s outcome. The 2024 NFL Draft is over, and the Atlanta Falcons made waves in the league when they selected quarterback Michael Penix Jr. at number eight. Perhaps the pick wasn’t as high as many thought on draft night, since it has now been revealed that up to three teams attempted to trade into the top-10 for Penix, according to NFL Network’s James Palmer. In any case, since Atlanta had spent more than $100 million on Kirk Cousins at the beginning of free agency, the selection itself was surprising. The choice to select Penix at 8 in the first round of the draft when it was made was met with disapproval among Falcons supporters. A staggering 54% of supporters rated the choice a “F,” and another 18% awarded it a “D.” That is a resounding 72% who consider the choice to be a failure. Merely 6% of respondents rated the choice a “A,” 8% a “B,” and 13% a “C.” There is a fairly frequent psychological phenomenon that permeates almost every element of life, but it is most evident in sports, and the NFL Draft in particular. That’s the propensity for supporters, even those who initially disagreed fiercely, to eventually “come around” to the decisions or actions made by their team.We questioned Falcons supporters if they now believe Atlanta will win the 2024 NFL Draft in this week’s SB Nation Reacts. In one week, let’s examine how much has changed in terms of opinions. Just one week ago, a resounding majority of Falcons supporters—72%—deemed the Penix selection a bust. Today, opinions on whether Atlanta emerged victorious in the 2024 NFL Draft are nearly evenly divided. The first round pick is the largest and most significant investment in the whole class, but it goes without saying that this question considers the entire draft rather than just the Penix selection. Whatever way you look at it, that represents a substantial shift in perspective from a week ago. To be clear, I don’t hold it against supporters if they decide to change their vote. People tend not to stay angry over things like this, especially when it comes to something like fandom, which is meant to be enjoyable! Additionally, we’ve all had a little more time to digest the shock and realise that our presumptions going into the draft might not have been accurate. one first-round quarterback will have the easiest transition to the NFL? is another question we posed to all NFL fans, one I felt would be particularly fascinating to Falcons fans. Caleb Williams is, predictably, at the top of the list. He is entering an offence with an improved offensive line and a suddenly excellent receiver corps, and he has a clear route to success. Overall, it’s a terrific situation, but I have some worries about the offensive coaching staff given how poorly they used Justin Fields. At the very bottom, Michael Penix Jr. is visible. Though, to be fair, his total differential between #4 and #5 is only 2%, NFL fans believe Penix is headed for disaster. I believe that this is less about Penix genuinely entering a difficult circumstance and more about national supporters being angry at Atlanta’s choice. The position might be advantageous for Penix in theory, but it also has a lot of room for drama. It could also help that he hasn’t had a clear route into the starting lineup for the past two seasons. Other than that, Penix appears to have a respectable setup considering Atlanta’s strong offensive line and developing receiver group. How do you feel about the public’s sudden shift in view regarding Atlanta’s draft, and does Penix truly have it worse than the other rookies in this class?
