Kirk Cousins will be the team’s starting quarterback in 2024 despite all the fanfare of the offseason, particularly after the Atlanta Falcons selected Michael Penix ninth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Cousins’ health is the only thing separating that reality from the Falcons’ wishes, and fortunately, it doesn’t seem to be much of a barrier. Head coach Raheem Morris gave an upbeat report on Cousins over the weekend, stating that he is getting closer to being “full-go.” Regarding quarterback Kirk Cousins’ injury recuperation, Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said, “Kirk is getting better every day.” He is currently exerting all of his effort on Phase 2. He’s practically running wild out there.” Overall, the team is still in the no-contact phase.Between now and the beginning of the season, not to mention training camp, there is still plenty of time for us to find out exactly what it means for Cousins. However, the fact that he has been throwing and the positive reviews up to this point provide hope for Week 1. That optimism, for apparent reasons, is highly significant. Penix was selected by the Falcons to be their long-term starting quarterback, but hardly anyone is saying they want him to start right away. The significant sum of money given to Cousins and the terms of the contract both indicated at the time of signing and still imply that the Falcons hope to have Cousins starting quarterback in 2024 and 2025 and winning a ton of games as a result. In the near term, the Falcons risk a quarterback controversy if he is not ready to play right away this season. However, it was apparent at the time of signing—even before the Falcons’ alleged tampering—that they had taken the necessary steps to feel confident about Cousins’ progress in his recuperation. With the exception of an unforeseeable setback, it seems like Cousins will be ready for the Falcons’ season opening, providing them with the confidence and starting quarterback they needed following a few disappointing seasons.
