Mykal Walker, a former linebacker for Fresno State, signs with the Washington Commanders in 2024 to start his NFL career. During NFL Draft month, former star linebacker Mykal Walker of the Fresno State Bulldogs found a new home in the NFL. Walker, a player who was named to the Mountain West Conference First Team, has signed with the Washington Commanders. The NFC East team made the announcement on Tuesday. The Pittsburgh Steelers were the team that the adaptable defender last played for. He participated in eight games in all, starting five of them. Walker finished 2023 with 33 total tackles, 21 solo stops, two tackles for a loss, and one intercepted—during the New England Patriots game on December 7. Walker’s greatest performance came on December 3 in a 10-tackle performance in a home defeat to the Arizona Cardinals, where he recorded seven solo tackles. Walker had not had a double-digit tackle NFL day since he was a member of the Atlanta Falcons on October 30, 2022, against the Carolina Panthers. Walker spent the previous season with the Steelers despite being on the practice squads of the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders. Walker is well-remembered by Bulldog supporters for his versatility in 2019, having played defensive end, outside linebacker, and inside linebacker. During Fresno State’s 2018 Mountain West Conference championship run, which included a victory over Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl, he rose to fame as a beloved defensive star. Walker won defensive MVP at Boise State during the MWC championship game victory over Fresno State. Walker amassed 183 total tackles with 89 solo stops during his tenure as a wide receiver. In addition, he covered 11 passes with a swatting motion. 2019 was his last season, during which he recorded a career-high nine tackles for a loss. In the 2020 draft, he was selected by the Falcons in the fourth round with the 119th overall pick. Walker was a standout player for the NCAA Division II Azusa Pacific team before joining Fresno State, where he was named an All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference player. Walker excelled in football, basketball, and track and field as a three-sport athlete at Vacaville High School. Walker will get back together with Dan Quinn, the head coach of the Falcons, who is currently leading Washington in the coaching department. During the third day of the ’20 draft, Quinn assisted Walker in getting into the league. However, Quinn was fired during the 2022 season, and Raheem Morris took over as his replacement. Walker was able to play in Atlanta for Arthur Smith for the following two seasons.
