Corbin Carroll accepts the ROTY Award at the 99th New York Baseball Writers’ Dinner
Corbin Carroll became the first Diamondbacks player to win Rookie of the Year when he was formally recognized with the trophy during the 99th New York Baseball Writers’ Dinner.
Carroll was third in the league in stolen bases with 54, made it to the All-Star game, and placed fifth in MVP voting during his rookie campaign. He also led the league in triples.
Carroll began his victory speech by stating that it has been a team effort before expressing gratitude to his friends, family, and prior coaches.
Carroll then focused on Mike Hazen, the general manager of the Diamondbacks.Carroll thanked his general manager, Haze, for taking a chance on him, saying, “I’ll give you special attention.” I am incredibly thrilled to see you and your family acknowledged for the daily sacrifices you make for the organization because you took a chance on me in the draft five years ago, and I am now sharing this room with you.
Mike Hazen and the Diamondbacks signed Corbin Carroll to an 8-year, $111 million contract before the start of his rookie campaign. Despite the fact that this move can be viewed as a significant risk, it shows how much the team values Carroll as the cornerstone of their franchise.
Following Carroll’s remarks of acceptance, Mike Hazen received the “You Gotta Have Heart Award.” This honor is given to a baseball community member who has persevered through extremely trying times.
In 2022, Hazen lost his wife to glioblastoma. In memory of their mother, Nicole, his four sons threw out the first pitch in Game 3 of the NLDS.
