Sad: Alabama lost another young defensive back due to

Tony Mitchell is another promising defensive back that the Alabama football club has lost to the transfer portal. Mitchell made seven appearances as a true freshman, largely on special teams, and recorded one tackle. Being a top-200 recruit and the 15th-ranked cornerback in the 2023 signing class, the product of Alabaster, Alabama, was a four-star prospect.

After Peyton Woodyard entered the portal on Monday, the Alabama football team suffered its second loss in the defensive back room and its ninth overall loss during the spring transfer period. In an effort to counteract their losses to the NFL Draft and the transfer portal, the Tide have been gaining defensive backroom experience. They were successful in acquiring Charlotte safety Kameron Howard but unsuccessful in acquiring Arizona State transfer Ed Woods.

Tony Mitchell’s departure is surprising in a way because he was a strong candidate for a star position on the team or a different defensive role. Perhaps Mitchell entered the transfer portal because of Howard’s arrival and the springtime rise of players like Red Morgan and Bray Hubbard. Although there were rumors about Mitchell’s potential, it appeared that Mitchell had reinforced his dedication to the program.

Things have picked up in the last few weeks as the Tide have lost Woodyard, Mitchell, James Brockermeyer, and Khurtiss Perry to the transfer portal, following a relatively quiet start to the spring transfer window.

Will the Tide try to add more players to their roster?

Due to player losses during this transfer window, Kalen DeBoer and Courtney Morgan now have access to a few unanticipated scholarships. With the transfer portal’s final weeks approaching, the Tide might now appear more active and potentially sign high-upside players. The offensive line, cornerback, safety, and possibly wide receiver are the positions to watch if the Tide wants to pursue players with depth or starting potential.
