Reviving a 20-Year-Old Dream, River Heritage Park in Florence Awaits Visitors with a Mix of History, Nature, and Community

FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) The City of Florence now has a park and trail built on what was once a master plan more than 20 years ago.

Parks and Recreation Director Bill Jordan remarked, “To see the start of it on a piece of paper as a plan and then a finished product is really, really humbling.”

Wilson Dam, the industrial revolution, and music are all combined in Jordan’s description of the River Heritage Park, which will open in less than a month.

“I think it’s really, really special for our community to have a trail along the river where people can get out, bike, walk, and bring a family,” Jordan stated.

In order to create an engaging trail for visitors, officials stated that they intended to incorporate historical artifacts into the park. Three more elements have been added: an amphitheater, a waterfall, and a trail for bicyclists and walkers. But they’re not going to stop there.

Mayor Andy Betteron stated, “Just so you know, I hope someday we’ll be able to take this to McFarland Park.”

Betterton wants more green space available for locals to enjoy as a getaway. Additionally, he mentioned that green areas such as this typically boost a city’s tourism, economy, and population.

Betterton stated, “This opens us up all the way up across the northern part of Alabama.” “Wow, I’ve said it numerous times, and I’m utterly thrilled. Simply put, I believe this puts us on the map.

The park will open officially on May 5 from 3 to 5 p.m. According to Jordan, the opening hours have not yet been decided upon, but the model may be the same as others.
