49ers Raise Eyebrows with Bold Picks in ESPN Mock Draft: Select Rosengarten and Phillips Despite Reaching Claims

The 49ers “reached” in each round of the two-round mock draft that ESPN provided.

The San Francisco 49ers need to add competition at right tackle in the NFL Draft, as we’ve stated. One of the best offensive lineman available to the Niners is projected by several draft experts to be number 31.

Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN did the same in a mock draft that he made public on Wednesday. There’s a new name with McCaffrey family connections:

31. 49ers of San Francisco

Washington’s Roger Rosengarten, OT

I’m going to remain with my mock draft forecast from 3.0 since Rosengarten might compete with Colton McKivitz for right tackle snaps. Rosengarten covered 1,158 pass-blocking snaps for the Huskies without giving up a sack. Additionally, he is somewhat acquainted with one of San Francisco’s celebrities, as Christian McCaffrey’s father, Ed, coached him during his two years of high school at Valor Christian in Colorado.

NFL talent was all over Washington’s offense. Within the first three rounds of this month’s draft, their quarterback, three wide receivers, and both offensive tackles will be selected.

This would be seen by the draft community as reaching. Rosengarten is rated closer to 90 than 30 overall in the majority of draft guides.

Rosengarten is a gifted athlete who plays inside out for pass protection and has the quickness to cut off linemen. However, his weight, wingspan, arm length, and hand size are all within the 30th percentile or lower. In terms of strength, Rosengarten is the complete opposite of Mike McGlinchey since he struggles to get moving during the running game or to grab onto and maintain blocks.

As a four-year sophomore, he still has room to improve and gain strength. With this pick, the 49ers are letting us know that they believe there is a sharp decline in talent at the tackle position and that they won’t be optimistic about drafting a starting-caliber tackle in the next round.

Additionally, Kiper Jr. selected a player for the Niners in the second round, selecting choice No. 63:

49ers of San Francisco, 63

Dru Phillips, CB, West Virginia

I considered the 49ers’ defensive line, but Phillips could provide instant depth to a secondary in need of a talent boost. Over the previous two seasons, as the closest defender in coverage, he gave up just one touchdown reception. Although he possesses attractive physical characteristics, he lacks polish.

At number sixty-two, the Baltimore Ravens selected Kansas State guard Cooper Beebe, and at number sixty-four, the Kansas City Chiefs selected BYU offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia. Phillips, who is a player or two better than Rosengarten, is therefore sandwiched between two other players. That would be difficult to accept, especially in light of the organizations both candidates attended and their stellar reputations for talent development.

By all standards, Phillips is undersized, finds it difficult to tackle in the open field, and requires assistance covering larger wideouts. It is anticipated that he will be selected in the fourth round as a prospect. These two selections would be considered reaches, and I’m not sure which one the Niners are going for at the position.
