Ten Hag: We maintained control at all times.
In spite of Newport County leveling our FA Cup fourth-round match after trailing by two goals, Erik ten Hag was unconcerned that Manchester United would be about to pull off a giantkilling.
Following early goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, his first at the senior level, the Reds led 2-0. County responded with goals from Bryn Morris and the outstanding Will Evans.
A fifth-round road date against either Nottingham Forest or Bristol City is scheduled after Rasmus Hojlund closed things up in stoppage time after Antony had given the team the lead back.
After the win, Ten Hag gave interviews to the BBC, Talksport, and MUTV to share his thoughts on a fun match at Rodney Parade.
WE MANAGED THINGS.
I believe the work is finished. We were excellent in the first twenty-five minutes and dominated the game. We were in possession of it and exerting excellent control over it. We might have won 3-0 or 4-0 because we scored two excellent goals and were producing one, two, or three more. Actually, they scored a goal out of nothing. They then scored another goal right after the break, and I have to fault the team for that. Then we had to start over, but we persevered and had grit to fight back and score the third and fourth goals.”
MISSED OPORTUNITIES
“We were perhaps a little bit slower than we were, but we still had control of the game. Alejandro Garnacho struck the crossbar with two men in front of the goal, denying us the chance to make it 3-0. Antony also sent us a few images. They truly had nothing, and we had plenty of opportunities; their goal came from nothing.”
Are you aware?
“Not at all. We were ruling and manipulating the game. Naturally, you have to watch how the opponent responds to encouragement—both from our perspective and theirs. They were clearly getting fuel, but we remained poised and unagitated.”
DISCUSSING THE TARGETS
It’s excellent. I believe Antony scored a goal and assisted Bruno’s first goal. Therefore, we expect the finished result from him, just as we do the rest of his work. It was proper, as it should have been, and it is today. I believe it was because a lot of today’s players carried out their duties. They worked effectively together and had a positive team dynamic.”
A MINUTE WITH THE BANK
“We use these games to allow players like Licha Martinez, Luke Shaw, and Casemiro to make their comebacks. Since they require this rhythm in order to advance to new levels, I believe that the game was excellent overall. We played Burnley in a friendly last week, and we had minutes. Now that they have more minutes, they need them. Higher levels and energy are necessary to compete in the Premier League, and I believe this game will benefit them.”
DUO TARGETS
“Every game must be won by us. Thus, the Premier League and the FA Cup are the two current targets for contention. You must switch between games.”
