Lions OC Ben Johnson’s Agent Denies Wild Reported Asking Price to Become Head Coach
Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Lions, may be a top pick in the upcoming summer by NFL teams searching for a new head coach.
Early on Thursday afternoon, NFL insider Josina Anderson said that Johnson’s camp was requesting a compensation of approximately $15 million annually in exchange for a possible move up to head coaching.
However, Johnson’s agent Richmond Flowers posted a denial of the allegation immediately after Anderson’s tweet.
Flowers responded to Anderson on X, then known as Twitter, saying, “I’m told personnel around the league are discussing their awareness that there is no asking price or demand and this tweet is 100% false and irresponsible reporting, per source.”
Although teams are speculating about Johnson for the 2024 season, he is occupied with leading the Lions offence, which ranks third in the league in terms of yards per game and fifth in terms of points per game.
On Thursday, Johnson sidestepped the topic when asked how he would block out the possibility of future opportunities, praising Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn instead.
Johnson stated of Glenn, “He’s a guy that we should be asking about head coaching,” according to the Detroit Free Press. “That guy is amazing at what he’s done. When he gets the chance, he’s going to be an incredible head football coach, so when you ask him those kinds of things, you should make sure you’re asking them to him as well.”
