Christian Falk of The Daily Briefing reported that Hansi Flick, who previously led Bayern to a treble, had accepted an offer to return as their manager before signing with FC Barcelona. On May 11, Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, contacted Flick at the behest of Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Flick agreed to the role, expecting a follow-up discussion that never happened. Eberl instead pursued Vincent Kompany. Concurrently, Xavi’s unexpected dismissal from Barcelona led to Flick’s opportunity with the Catalan club, facilitated by the breakdown in Bayern’s communication.  Hansi Flick was contacted by Bayern Munich regarding assuming the role of manager; the coach even accepted the offer prior to signing contract with FC Barcelona. Flick apparently accepted the offer after hearing that he might coach Bayern for year. After that, Eberl promised to call back to talk about the squad, but it doesn’t seem like they ever did. The Barcelona post was subsequently offered to Flick, who had been incensed that there had been no follow-up telephone conversation.
