Pass rusher Chase Young, a 2024 addition to the Saints, gives defensive coordinator Joe Woods’ squad some young. He joins a New Orleans club that made the decision to rebuild this offseason with key players like safety Tyrann Mathieu, linebacker Damiro Davis, and pass rusher Cameron Jordan, all of whom inked new contracts in March. Jordan, who turns 35 in July, thinks Young’s signing might give the Saints a new angle. “I believe Chase Young will be a tremendous asset to our defense,” Jordan stated on Friday night’s NFL Total Access. Carl Granderson, who has been outstanding these past few years, is already here. I believe that when he grows and achieves the proper physical fitness, he will be on the other side. He will be an additional component that we may utilize. “I start to think that on a critical third down, Carl Granderson, Chase, and I are all going to be on the field at the same time, and I’m probably going to have to go in the middle. It doesn’t concern me. Whatever is necessary. I will align myself as Za’Darius Smith in the middle, moving around and attempting to engage in activity. I believe it gives us another line of defense.”Since joining the NFL, Jordan—the No. 24 overall pick in the 2011 draft—has caused offensive coordinators problems. Jordan has totaled 225 quarterback hits, 153 tackles for loss, 117.5 sacks, and 15 forced fumbles in 209 games throughout his 13 years at Bayou State. But in 2023, the eight-time Pro Bowler only tallied two sacks—the fewest since his debut campaign (1.0). For Young, the past eight months have been hectic. He joined the Washington Commanders at the beginning of the 2023 season. Washington sent Young to the San Francisco 49ers on Halloween in exchange for a third-round selection. Young signed a one-year contract with the Saints during free agency, and the next day he had neck surgery. It is anticipated that the 2020 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year will be prepared for the September kickoff. However, the Saints are not the only team in the division to make important offseason additions. After Kirk Cousins suffered a torn Achilles tendon, the Atlanta Falcons signed him to a hefty contract. However, they still selected Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 overall in order to develop their quarterback. Jordan provided the Falcons some friendly banter about their “situation” at the position and related his experience with the former Viking when questioned about Cousins entering the NFC South. “I think I sacked him when he was with his two previous teams,” Jordan stated. “I fired him when he worked for Washington; I’m positive. I’m positive I sacked him using the Vikings. They bring in Michael Penix Jr., a new quarterback—possibly the newest quarterback this season. I have no idea why they would invest a top-10 overall selection in a quarterback. I’m not sure what you’re doing there. I’m simply going to fan the fires, you know. Why not? Head coach Raheem Morris says that Cousins is “pretty much full-go” for offseason exercises, so he should be ready for the clubs’ Week 4 meeting. Jordan knows that his latest remarks have added a little more fuel to the fire.
