MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9): Royce Lewis celebrated his first Opening Day with the Minnesota Twins without wasting any time at all.
With two outs in the first inning, Lewis sent a 0-2 fastball 423 feet over the left field fence to give the Twins an early 1-0 lead over Kansas City. He has had knee surgery the past two seasons, so this is his first Opening Day in good health.
Lewis also hit two home runs in the postseason the previous year. He’s got a way of making the big moments work.
Jim Rich, the sports director for FOX 9 Sports, had a conversation with Lewis on Wednesday, during the team’s practice day at Kauffman Stadium, on the upcoming season.
Lewis, regrettably, did not go past the third inning for the Twins. Lewis stumbled near second base while trying to score on a double by Carlos Correa, forcing him to leave the game hurt. According to the Twins, he hurt his right quadriceps.
After the game, Lewis discussed the injury in the clubhouse.
Twins win Opening Day 4-1 against Royals
On Opening Day at Kauffman Stadium, the Minnesota Twins defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-1. Pablo Lopez and Byron Buxton responded from the clubhouse.
“I was just perplexed. It was honestly only a slight cramp. My first thought was, “Damn, this should be 3-1,” as it suddenly became more tense. Lewis remarked, “I was just disappointed that I couldn’t score. Carlos hit it perfectly down in the corner for me to score.”
Lewis got an MRI following the game, according to Rocco Baldelli.
I don’t have any updates at this time. We’re going to take our time to review his MRI and assess his condition. Seeing him leave the field in that manner is undoubtedly a very trying circumstance. It’s really quite astounding how much he just keeps producing,” Baldelli remarked. “After evaluating him, we should have an update within the next day or two. It’s not how you want the injury department to start the season.”
The Twins defeated the Royals 4-1 to open the season. Pablo Lopez struck out seven in seven innings while giving up just one run, and Carlos Correa finished with three hits and two RBI.
