Cole’s right elbow inflammation has gradually improving. The New York Yankees are getting closer to having their star player return. For the first time since he was sidelined during spring training due to discomfort in his right elbow, Gerrit Cole threw off a mound during a bullpen session. The current American League Cy Young Award winner only threw 15 pitches, all of which were fastballs, but the outcome seemed to please him. He averaged 89 mph and delivered 13 of his 15 pitches for strikes. After the meeting, Cole told reporters, “I’m having a good day today,” according to the New York Post. “When I arrived this morning, I was energised. I’ve simply been missing it, so returning to the mound feels good.” According to the Post, the right-hander assessed his readiness to pitch in a game as “somewhere under five” on a scale of one to ten. The Yankees and Cole, 33, will need to watch how his elbow feels after he throws. It may take him some time to reach the point where he is prepared to throw for the Yankees, even in the unlikely event that he has no setbacks. The group that shut down Cole did not specify when he would return. At the end of May, he can be taken off the 60-day injury list. But Cole will effectively need to work his way up to a starter’s workload in spring training once he is able to resume a normal schedule. Cole isn’t ready for the six-week process that usually entails that. Cole finished 15–4 in 33 starts with a 2.63 ERA and 222 strikeouts in 209 innings the previous season. He received unanimous votes for the AL Cy Young Award after that performance. The Yankees, who entered Saturday’s game against the Detroit Tigers with a 21–13 record, had played admirably without Cole thus far. As a result, New York is now one game behind the Baltimore Orioles for second place in the AL East. The combined ERA of the Yankees starting pitching staff is 3.43, with a 3.03 ERA as a whole. With a 3.41 ERA, Marcus Stroman leads the group of starters who throw at least 36 innings.
