Alabama football fans are among the nation’s most devoted and ardent supporters. The Crimson Tide have dominated college football for the last 20 seasons, winning six titles, 16 straight seasons with double-digit victories, and producing NFL players of the highest caliber.
In particular, Alabama has produced some of the top running backs of the past several years, such as Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry, winners of the Heisman Trophy. Naturally, Alabama supporters were taken aback when On3 Sports—a media outlet focused on football—ranked them outside of the top five running back units ahead of the 2024 campaign.
Columnist Jesse Simonton of National College Football recently revealed his top ten running back lineups for the upcoming fall season, and three SEC clubs made the cut. The Ole Miss Rebels were the next SEC team to face the Georgia Bulldogs, who took the conference lead instead of the Crimson Tide. Football supporters from Alabama expressed their frustration with the rankings by mentioning Simonton on social media.
In 2024, DeBoer and company will rely on a fresh class of extremely gifted rushers, but as the offseason approaches, On3 Sports’ Jesse Simonton sees them as anything other than a top-five team. Through Twitter, Alabama football supporters have voiced their disapproval of the writer to Simonton without holding back.
With outside quarterback Jalen Milroe, the Alabama football program will have a new look in the backfield in 2024. Running back Jase McClellan, who was selected in the sixth round of this month’s NFL draft, will play for the Atlanta Falcons next season. After four years in Tuscaloosa, fellow rusher Roydell Williams transferred to the Florida State Seminoles. Regarding the upcoming season, Richard Young, Justice Haynes, and Jam Miller are expected to spearhead the Alabama running back group and usher in the Kalen DeBoer era.
Miller has amassed 424 running yards on 5.7 yards per attempt over the course of two seasons, placing him as the fourth-ranked rusher in the class of 2022, according to 247Sports. Another highly-regarded talent, Haynes, carried for 168 yards last season on 6.7 yards per attempt as a true freshman. Last but not least, Young is a former four-star talent in the class of 2023.
