After winning their tenth straight game on Wednesday, the Minnesota Twins continued to be one of the best teams in baseball.
With a new addition to the Twins dugout—a rally sausage—it marks the team’s longest winning streak since 2008.
Since its launch last Thursday, the Cloverdale summer tangy sausage has functioned as a rallying point.
The “substantially packaged” sausage was given to Twins third baseman Kyle Farmer by a sponsor. David Popkins, the hitting coach, reportedly carried the sausage to the dugout, per MLB.com. Ryan Jeffers, catcher for the Twins, now always has it in his bag.
Rocco Baldelli, the manager of the Twins, stated, “I’m all for it because it’s bringing us a lot of hits and runs and stuff.”
After a home run or after the team scores a run, Jeffers frequently tosses the sausage at the players. Before an at-bat, some players touch it for good fortune.
The sausage is referred to as a “perfect single-serve appetizer for parties and tailgating, an easy snack on-the-go, and lunch meat for hearty sandwiches.” It is an entirely cooked blend of beef, pork, and seasonings. It should also be chilled after opening, but thus far, the Twins have not followed this advice.
Baldelli is on board, although he is a little worried that the gift might be opened.
“[I’m] slightly concerned, as more of an adult than maybe some of the people in the other room, that the package is going to open up and the thing hasn’t been refrigerated in many days,” said Baldelli. “And there’s no doubt that when that thing opens up, whoever’s touching it is in deep trouble.”
But Minnesota has won and scored runs as a result of it.
The Twins have won seven games and scored 53 runs since their opening game on April 25 against the Chicago White Sox. During that time, they have scored at least 10 runs three times, matching their previous season-long total. Over the last seven days, they have amassed the most hits, RBIs, and runs in Major League Baseball, with 80.
Baldelli is still not sure about its good luck charm, but Minnesota will be watching it closely.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that we are carrying around something that is very, very unhealthy for the human body,” he stated.
