The selection of Kol-Aid McKinstry in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday marked the continuation of an incredible year for Alabama’s defensive backs. New Orleans selected McKinstry at overall position 41.
Following the Detroit Lions’ choice of Crimson Tide cornerback Terrion Arnold with pick No. 24 overall on Thursday in the first round, McKinstry was selected. In 2023, the two formed one of the best corner tandems in the SEC.
The native of Birmingham attended Pinson Valley High School, where he played football. After playing for Alabama for three seasons, he filed for the NFL draft.
McKinstry was selected by The Sporting News and the Associated Press media as a first-team all-American in the previous season. Nick Saban, the former head coach of the Crimson Tide, also gave him credit for his improved leadership in 2023.
In October, Saban stated of McKinstry, “He’s done a good job.” He exudes confidence in his abilities, and it appears that he is beginning to recognize the significance of how influencing others may genuinely add value to his own life. But because you’re in the thick of things and making calls, it’s a little more difficult to accomplish that at the corner than it is when you’re playing safety or star. However, he did a fantastic job at it.
Throughout the 2023 season, other teams mostly refrained from taking shots at McKinstry. During the year, he totaled 32 tackles, including two for loss and seven pass breakups.
When McKinstry entered the draft, he was regarded as a possible first-round pick. But because of a rush on offensive skill position players early in the draft, he fell into the second round.
