A peculiar request was made to the umpire by French ATP Tour player Corentin Moutet during his match against Shang Juncheng at the Madrid Open.
During his nearly four-hour altercation with Shang, Moutet demanded that the umpire be served coffee on the court.
The umpire told the Frenchman that she would neither be giving him coffee nor making arrangements for one to be delivered to the court, to which he responded violently.Moutet noticed there was no coffee waiting for him and approached the chair umpire during a pause in play.
He began to scream and yell on the court as a result of the umpire’s reaction to his objection, which only made him angry more.
“Wherever we play doesn’t matter; coffee is not provided. I am unable to present it to you,” the umpire stated.
Moutet launched into a lengthy diatribe about all the other delicacies being given at the Madrid Open, but he ended it with the cynical remark, “Am I asking for caviar?”
The Frenchman eventually received coffee, but not from the government. As soon as a passerby handed Moutet a cup over the railings, the Madrid crowd laughed and started cheering.
A few moments later, the umpire could be heard asking for security to remove the supporter.
Moutet, who has grown to be one of the most contentious players on the men’s tour, requested a one-liter bottle of Pepsi at an Argentina Open qualifier in February.
This time, the 25-year-old achieved his goal; however, in another act of disobedience, he later denied getting post-match care from the Madrid Open physiotherapist.
In January 2022, Moutet was eliminated from the Adelaide International because he insulted and cursed at a chair umpire.
Besides, two years prior, at an exhibition under the direction of French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou, the player lost his composure, kicking a racket into the bleachers, hitting the wall behind the court, and receiving a warning from a chair umpire.
Moutet referred to Stefanos Tsitsipas’ father, Apostolos, as “dumb” when he spoke during his serve at the same competition.
“You’re not permitted to speak. At a press conference in 2020, Moutet stated, “I don’t have any issues with Stefanos; he’s a good guy, but his father is stupid, and everyone knows it.”
Moutet has a 16–10 win–loss record this season and has played all of his matches on clay in 2024. His finest performance of the year came when he advanced to the final four of the Chile Open and made it to the semifinals of the Naples Challenger.
