49ers Logo-License Plate Project Nears Success, Offers Possibility of Free Plates to Fans

Efforts to secure California DMV approval for a 49ers logo-license plate appear promising, with the possibility of obtaining one for free, but time is of the essence.

For the past two years, the San Francisco 49ers have been striving to introduce special California license plates adorned with their team logo, yet progress has been slow. The state’s DMV stipulates a minimum of 7,500 pre-paid orders to greenlight a specialty plate, but as of March 31, only 4,135 orders had been placed by 49ers fans, with a deadline of May 31 looming.

To ensure the project’s success, the DeBartolo-York family, owners of the 49ers, took decisive action. Reportedly, they purchased the remaining 3,365 plates needed to meet the quota, intending to distribute them to fans for free.

However, the window for securing a complimentary plate is closing rapidly. Initially offered to Levi’s Stadium season ticket holders, who claimed nearly half of the remaining inventory, there’s still an opportunity to order online using the promo code “faithful” for a free plate. Nevertheless, even complimentary plates will incur a $40 annual renewal fee, with personalized options priced at $103.

In the event of exhaustible free offerings, acquiring a 49ers license plate will cost $50, in addition to the recurring $40 renewal fee. The plates bear the slogan “Faithful to State Parks” and serve as a fundraiser for the California Natural Resources Agency’s Outdoors for All program.

This initiative marks the first occasion in California’s history where professional sports team logos grace license plates. In contrast, a similar endeavor by the Los Angeles Rams fell short, garnering a mere 1,000 orders and leading to the project’s cancellation.
