It’s imperative that the New York Yankees allow their former All-Star some time to improve his at-bat strategy. With a record of 23-13, the New York Yankees are among the top teams in Major League Baseball. However, not every player on the squad is performing to the same degree. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report identified a former All-Star in New York after scouring the league for each team’s most memorable slumps. For the Yankees, Gleyber Torres has been a reliable bat throughout the years, but in 2024, something doesn’t appear to be there. He is just slashing 222/.293/.274 so far. A few days ago, he hit his first home run. Torres may be experiencing a lull in the early going of the season, which would not be unusual. His slash line is a pitiful 247, 318, and 369, far lower than his career norms. However, compared to previous seasons, his results this year are significantly worse. The 27-year-old’s primary problem thus far has been that his contact quality is simply lacking. Although it may seem obvious, his at-bats do reflect those from the 2020 and 2021 seasons, when he was unable to provide much power at the plate. He has never had xBA (.210) or xWOBA (.272) as low as they are. This season, Statcast’s exit velocity is approximately 88, compared to the previous two years, when it was closer to 90. He’s on a four-game hitting streak, though, so things are looking up for him. His batting average is now higher than it was at the close of April. Given his past tendency to crank up the pace in May, it’s probably best to give him a little leeway before becoming alarmed. […]
A shadow of doubt surrounds star big man Kristaps Porzingis as the Boston Celtics, led by head coach Joe Mazzulla, move on to face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA playoffs’ second round. This is because of health issues. The team is being cautious, especially considering Porzingis’ recent mild calf strain—a condition known to have the potential to worsen and result in Achilles problems. Giannis Antetokounmpo missed the entire Milwaukee Bucks first-round series against the Indiana Pacers in the NBA’s first playoff round due to a similar calf strain, underscoring the difficulty of the injury. The Celtics are especially careful not to rush Porzingis back into action because of his history of injuries, which might jeopardise his ability to play through the remainder of the postseason or even impair his readiness for next season. Coach Mazzulla stated that Porzingis is recovering during a recent update that aired on NBC Sports Boston, but the team has not yet established a firm timeframe for his return. He appeared to be walking a little more confidently. KP’s quality is that he invests time. He is the type of guy that always understands exactly what to do and puts in the effort to be ready, whether he is playing or recovering from an injury. The Celtics are still optimistic that he will be able to make an impact on the court as soon as possible—possibly even during their next series against the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers are a huge underdog, so the Celtics may have some leeway in how they handle Porzingis’ recuperation. In order to keep Porzingis healthy and avoid any long-term injuries that would jeopardise their chances of winning a championship, Boston may be able to control their starting lineup thanks to this circumstance. Having said that, the Celtics would adore having Kristaps Porzingis return to the court for this series. However, it remains to be seen when he will be able to recover from his calf strain.
