Cole’s right elbow inflammation has gradually improving. The New York Yankees are getting closer to having their star player return. For the first time since he was sidelined during spring training due to discomfort in his right elbow, Gerrit Cole threw off a mound during a bullpen session. The current American League Cy Young Award winner only threw 15 pitches, all of which were fastballs, but the outcome seemed to please him. He averaged 89 mph and delivered 13 of his 15 pitches for strikes. After the meeting, Cole told reporters, “I’m having a good day today,” according to the New York Post. “When I arrived this morning, I was energised. I’ve simply been missing it, so returning to the mound feels good.” According to the Post, the right-hander assessed his readiness to pitch in a game as “somewhere under five” on a scale of one to ten. The Yankees and Cole, 33, will need to watch how his elbow feels after he throws. It may take him some time to reach the point where he is prepared to throw for the Yankees, even in the unlikely event that he has no setbacks. The group that shut down Cole did not specify when he would return. At the end of May, he can be taken off the 60-day injury list. But Cole will effectively need to work his way up to a starter’s workload in spring training once he is able to resume a normal schedule. Cole isn’t ready for the six-week process that usually entails that. Cole finished 15–4 in 33 starts with a 2.63 ERA and 222 strikeouts in 209 innings the previous season. He received unanimous votes for the AL Cy Young Award after that performance. The Yankees, who entered Saturday’s game against the Detroit Tigers with a 21–13 record, had played admirably without Cole thus far. As a result, New York is now one game behind the Baltimore Orioles for second place in the AL East. The combined ERA of the Yankees starting pitching staff is 3.43, with a 3.03 ERA as a whole. With a 3.41 ERA, Marcus Stroman leads the group of starters who throw at least 36 innings.
The Miami Marlins finally completed a deal with the San Diego Padres to acquire the two-time hitting champion, Luis Arraez, on Saturday morning. Before facing the Oakland Athletics again in the afternoon, the visiting Marlins must now reassemble. With the deal still pending, Arraez was a late scratch from the starting lineup in Friday’s series opener. The Marlins lost 3-1, but the defending National League hitting champion was allowed to stay in the Miami bench in full uniform because the trade was not official. Without a sure, Miami manager Skip Schumaker would have utilised Arraez off the bench in the eighth or ninth inning as the Marlins tried to overcome a 3-0 hole. After Vidal Brujan’s double scored them a run, they stranded the bases loaded in the eighth with no one out. Then, in the ninth, they drove home the possible tying run. The Marlins ended a seven-game homestand that saw four straight defeats send the team to an NL-worst 6-24 before the winning streak began. This was the team’s first loss following three straight victories over the Colorado Rockies. Arraez led off and finished with a team-best.299 average after registering two doubles, two singles, and two RBIs in the three victories. Shortly before the game, Schumaker tore up the Friday lineup card, putting Dane Myers in the leadoff spot and asking Otto Lopez, who was batting sixth, to replace Arraez at second base. In four plate appearances, Myers reached base twice with a single and a walk, while Lopez left after going 0-for-2 to pinch bat. Schumaker expressed his optimism that the upcoming weekend will be different, but he described it as “human nature” that his squad would experience an emotional setback upon learning of a deal at the last minute. “The initial shock factor is definitely real,” he stated. “We’re paid to win games and be professionals, so we’ll see if that goes away in a few days or on Saturday. But you sense it when a man like him is up for trade.” Trevor Rogers, a left-hander (0-4, 4.31 ERA), will be looking for more offensive help on Saturday after providing none this season, even with Arraez in the lineup. In his previous five starts, Rogers has allowed his teammates to score five runs altogether. Against the A’s, the 26-year-old has never lost. He has actually only made two career starts in California, in 2022 at San Diego and in a pair of 3-2 losses at San Francisco. The A’s Paul Blackburn (2-1, 3.34 ERA), a right-hander who has struggled in his last three outings, will face Rogers. Blackburn had an outstanding start to the season, throwing 19 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. But in his last three games, he has allowed 13 runs and 18 hits to be scored against him. In his career, the 30-year-old has only faced the Marlins once, in Miami in June, where he lost 7-5 after giving up five runs in five innings. In a game where he gave Garrett Cooper a three-run home run, he was not given a decision. The Oakland A’s (16-17) are within one game of.500 for the first time since Opening Day thanks to a season-best five-game winning streak; yet, Oakland manager Mark Kotsay stated that none of his players are keeping an eye on the standings. “We’re not getting wrapped up in the overall record,” he stated. “We simply want to go into each game ready to win. The team’s main goal is to improve daily by preparing for it.”
The Falcons are receiving more unfavourable coverage than ever before for selecting Michael Penix Jr. eighth overall, only weeks after giving Kirk Cousins a $180 million contract. The Falcons brass made the decision knowing that would be the case, but it didn’t make them any less confident in Penix, a prospect they consider to be a can’t miss. We’ll find out in a few years if they are correct. Jordan Schultz, an NFL insider, recently shared an amazing tale about how they knew they had to choose Michael Penix if he dropped to them in the draft. There is no denying Penix’s arm prowess. I wholeheartedly concur with Schultz; it was the finest in the class, and I don’t even believe it was close. Because of his amazing passing velocity, he can fit the ball into small windows and throw it downfield with accuracy. It’s a beautiful thing when it works, reminding the league of some of its best passers ever. But every time I hear this story, Zach Wilson comes to mind. QBs shouldn’t be judged on their ability to throw passes in the air while not wearing pads. GMs wind up applying for jobs in this manner. Although it is a step in the process, it is arguably the least significant one. At the top level, 90% of a quarterback’s success comes from what’s above the neck. That’s the reason it’s without a doubt the hardest position to project. It is hard to predict a quarterback’s thoughts prior to, during, and following a play, let alone how they will handle the challenges that inevitably await them at the next level. Arm strength is just one piece of the puzzle, but these kinds of tales are entertaining to tell even before Penix has played a snap in the NFL. This will be remembered as possibly the worst draft choice in Falcons history, and it will set them back for years if he can’t figure out the rest.
All too frequently, Luke Kornet is written off as the “funny guy.” The guy with the strange parties. The one with the hilarious interview style. the person after whom we named an original contest. Indeed, Luke Kornet embodies each of those qualities. Even with his eccentricities off the court and his occasionally odd appearance on it, Luke Kornet is a respectably skilled NBA basketball player. The fact that Kornet is a functional backup centre has long been recognised. When called upon, Kornet has continuously contributed to the Celtics’ bench minutes over the last two regular seasons. In the words of Bill Belichick, “He does his job.” However, it was legitimate to wonder if Luke could genuinely compete when it mattered most. Is he able to play through the postseason? Even though the sample size is tiny, Kornet’s performance against the Heat in Game 5 gave us new insight that implies Kornet is more than simply a stopgap player until Kristaps Porzingis returns. He is a talented player who can make the difference for this club in crucial situations. He’s too valuable to be used off the court, so that won’t be happening.Luke’s most noteworthy accomplishment in Game 5 was limiting Bam Adebayo, who was Miami’s greatest hope for any offensive consistency during the series, to 2–10 shooting on primarily midrange shots. No other Boston big was able to disrupt Bam the way Kornet did, at least not as successfully as Luke, with his size and length. Here, Bam tries to use his variety of jab steps and pump fakes to get Kornet to compete, but Luke doesn’t give in. He does his job; it’s obvious that he’s focused on the scouting report. Using his length, Kornet gets a near-perfect contest on a shot that Bam usually makes with ease. Bam’s shoulder could have moved a less seasoned Kornet out of position, but not this particular Green Kornet. superb defensive performance against a formidable attacking talent. Here’s where Kornet truly demonstrates his development:. He stays ahead of one of the league’s most agile big men by sliding his feet, and then he steals the shoulder from Bam—while reversing course, mind you—while still raising his hand to block the shot. Kornet is playing with such strength and tenacity these days, and it’s amazing to watch. Fantastic work keeping down here. While a lot of large guys would fall for these up-fakes, Kornet has a remarkable sense of when Bam is going to fire. He maintains his composure and wins a very strong match on the final Adebayo stroke. […]

The Oakland relievers were very appreciative of an A’s ball boy’s amazing diving stop on a foul ball in the second inning of Friday’s game against the Marlins. The ball guys are feeling good about themselves as a result of the athletes’ excellent performances. During Friday night’s 3-1 victory over the Miami Marlins at the Coliseum, in the upper half of the second inning, one of Oakland’s ball boys performed a spectacular diving stop on a foul ball that was hit by second baseman Otto Lopez. The A’s relievers showered the ball boy with praise for his play. “Wow,” remarked Chris Caray, the A’s play-by-play announcer. “That’s the coverage you can count on if you’re the A’s bullpen.” As he watched replays of the stop, A’s commentator Dallas Braden commented, “Sometimes you get to get dirty.” “You must spread out. Hehe. That is the subject of my discussion.” The ball boy made sure to shield one of MLB’s greatest relief corpses, even though it was unlikely the ball would reach any A’s pitchers in the bullpen. With an ERA of 2.47 going into their game against the Marlins on Saturday, the A’s bullpen is second best in the MLB, only surpassed by the New York Yankees (2.37). Before the 2024 MLB season, the A’s were not expected to do well. However, they have surpassed all preseason projections, finishing third in the AL West with a 16-17 record. The Seattle Mariners lead the division, and they are only 1.5 games behind. When Paul Blackburn takes the mound against the Marlins on Saturday, the A’s will look to extend their winning run to five games.
